Monster

“Monster,” 18 February 2007 (2003), DVD.    Very brutal, well done piece of work Charlize Theron’s Oscar-winning performance as Aileen Wournous, the profoundly damaged serial killer. She punishes men for the horrible abuses that frame her life. Her messed up affair with the naïve Selby Wall (Christina Ricci) is a caricature of male modeling. The prostitute turned provider becomes a mass murderer of men, including those who try to help her. Excellent bit from Bruce Dern as her only friend, the damaged Vietnam vet who manages a self-storage facility, and an astounding cameo from Taylor Pruitt Vince as a horribly shy, gentle, fat john with a speech impediment. In two minutes on-screen, he almost left me in tears. Both Theron and Ricci are weirdly wonderful. Fine score and soundtrack. See this but be warned, it is a very painful and brutal piece of work.
