“I’m Not There,” 25 July 2008 (2007), DVD. We liked but were also perplexed by this Todd Haynes (Superstar, Far From Heaven, Safe, etc) movie about Dylan that featured 6 Dylans, including Cate Blanchett, Heath Ledger as bobbie/Robbie/the band, Richard Gear as bobbie/Billy the Kid, and Christian Bale as Jack the Christ who remains true to Christianity, Ben Whishaw as Bobby/Arthur Rimbaud, and an 11-year old black kid, Marcus Carl Franklin, as Bobby/Woody for his various personas, periods and personalities. Each personality is real, each is false. Julianne Moore as a Baez-like being is fun and the scenes of his life are just great, including David Cross as Alan Ginsburg (their mutual admiration society is lovely) and the Seeger mess at Newport. His music, done by him and covered by others suffuses the movie with a weird reality although fake albums are everywhere and other whole periods and themes never emerge. Listening to Blanchett do Dylan of ’65 is wonderful, full of gibberish and wacked out arrogance. Other personae lead to false histories of perpetual Chistianity and Billy the Kidlet escaping to hop a freight and become someone else outside or inside his own time Worth seeing and very loving in its own weird way but still too fragmentary and inconsistent to hang together. See this one because it’s interesting, challenging, and too weird to miss. IMDB says Blanchett wore a sock down her pants to get the feel of how to walk like a man
