“Dreamgirls,” 6 December 2008 (2006), DVD. We both enjoyed this Broadway musical come to the screen (and I don’t like many). Wonderful singing from Beyonce,. Jennifer Hudson, Jamie Foxx, and Eddie Murphay as standins for Motown by any other name (Diana Ross, Mary Wilson, Barry Gordy, and Marvin Gaye). We follow them from the birth of the sound to the end of the Supremes. It’s not emotionally pretty, but it’s very well played (I really liked Murphy—Oscar nominee—in this). Hudson won an Oscar (Best Supporting) and her voice steals the show. Her acting’s sort of stiff, however. A sentimental win for the American Idol runner-up. See this one
