Man on Wire

Posted on July 23, 2009June 6, 2021 by Village Vidiot

“Man On  Wire,” 23 July 2009 (2008), DVD.    The story of Philippe Petit as he planned and executed his World Trade Center tightrope walk of 1974. Inspired to walk from the moment he heard about the buildings, he staged this amazing hack with the aid of a loving and devoted band of followers. I wanted more about the post-walk relationships, especially a where are they now retrospective on the people, all of whom are dumped like chopped liver the minute he becomes a ‘star’. We know about the buildings. I must admit I didn’t see this occur in 1974 as I was off in Colorado and, mostly, following Nixon’s departure. I spent the first part of the film looking for my dad in photos of the building’s construction. I never did see him. Bronwen loved this movie and felt closer to him as a charismatic leader living life the way geniuses do, absorbed in their own world and work. She connects to that single-minded focus more than I do, and it shows in her yoga, writing, knitting, and photography. See this movie.
