The White Ribbon

Posted on October 30, 2010July 18, 2020 by Village Vidiot

“The White Ribbon,” 30 October 2010 (2009), DVD.    We both liked, appreciated, and were troubled by this black-and-white German meditation on paired public and private denial, cruelty, repression, and hypocrisy. Class, religion, status, and gender all play roles in this painful cultural study of a small village on the eve of WWI plagued by public and private atrocities. It sets up later disasters, of course, but speaks to more intrinsic crises of culture and meaning in German identity. A wonderful and painful study. See this one
