The Friends of Eddie Coyle

Posted on November 26, 2010June 13, 2020 by Village Vidiot

“The Friends of Eddie Coyle,” [1974] 26 November 2010, DVD.    We watched this 1974 noir-like look at crime and criminals in Boston with my mom and little Bronwen. The three adults liked its pacing and the look at these small fry gangsters. Robert Mitchum is excellent in the title role. No glory, little loyalty, no ‘family,’ and with friends like these…. A remarkable look at a world very far away from “The Godfather,” even as Coppola was making the latter. Methinks this much more credible. Reporters and local literati ‘in the know’ view this as the best film ever made about crime in Boston, and that includes recent works like “The Town” and “The Departed”. See it for the time period and the atmosphere.
