Doubt

Posted on December 23, 2010October 28, 2020 by Village Vidiot

“Doubt,” 23 December 2010 (2008), DVD.    Thoughtful and interesting look at conflict in a Catholic school in the Bronx in 1964 when a priest (Seymour Philip Hoffman) is seen by the head nun ( Meryl Streep in a fine turn) as getting too close and behaving inappropriately with a student. Based on the Pulitze Prize-winning play by John Patrick Shanley. Very well acted and Streep is excellent in her arrogant and militaristic certainty. The church does not come across well in this film. Amy Adams is good (if a bit too sweet) as Sister James, the young, naïve and sincere nun who sees the imperative of moving forward and leaving the old ways of Catholic education behind, as is Viola Davis as the boy’s mother. The steps required to find the truth do not lead one to God.
