“The Act of Killing,” February 27, 2014 (2012), DVD, Director’s Cut. This is a surreal, fascinating and horrifying look at the gangsters who murdered 25 million communists, dissidents, bystanders, and citizens of Chinese ancestry in Indonesia in 1965. Acting as paramilitaries, they slaughtered men, women, and children with impunity. But this documentary follows these sociopaths who see themselves as society’s only ‘free men’ today, as they rationalize and rave about their ‘heroic’ deeds, their power, and their love of the movie gangster ethos and style. Of course, they acted on orders from and with support from right-wingers in the army, the press, and the government, and though never mentioned, with tacit, if not active support from the US. They are sick enough to imagine this film as validating their acts. A horrific must-see that, I hope, wins the Oscar.
