Dallas Buyers Club

Posted on May 8, 2014November 24, 2022 by Village Vidiot

“Dallas Buyers Club,” May 8, 2014, DVD.  Ron Woodruff. (Matthew McConaughey-Oscar for Best Actor) a Texas wild man, electrician, bull-rider, carouser learns he’s contracted HIV (an anachronism in 1985, that wasn’t known) and is given 30 days to live. Seeking AZT, he journey’s to Mexico and meets a doctor who convinces him to turn to treatments for the disease and its symptoms based on vitamins and non-toxics.  With the help of Rayon, a drug addict/transsexual fellow-HIV/AIDS sufferer (Jared Leto, Oscar for Best Supporting Actor), and, eventually, a sympathetic doctor (Jennifer Garner) he battles the medical community and the federal government for the right to pursue non-toxic treatments and to sustain those in need of aid through suppliers that aren’t tied to the drug industry. His ‘social conscience’ evolves over time from a money-making scheme that does ‘good work’ to an activist mentality. Well-acted and only occasionally melodramatic. The Leto and Garner characters didn’t exist in the actual events. Worth the watch.
