Arrival

Posted on August 15, 2017May 8, 2022 by Village Vidiot

“Arrival,” August 2017 (2016), DVD, on laptop in Minnesota.   The aliens have landed and linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams) is called upon to try to figure out how to communicate with them. She works along with physicist Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner) and the US military as fronted by Forest Whittaker as Col Weber (who I usually really like but who for some reason adopts a rather weird variant of a Boston accent). But the show is really hers as she struggles to comprehend non-human language and save the world from making a very serious mistake Adams is excellent. The plot gets murky and hard to follow in spots, although the conclusion really does tie it all together. Lots of little goofs as noted in IMDB. Still, I enjoyed this one, even on the very small screen, although it certainly would have played better at a serious venue. Denis Villenueve does a good job of directing this very interesting piece from a screenplay written by Eric Heisserer and Ted Chang based on the latter’s “Story of Your Life.”
