“Maudie,” Nov 11, 2017 (2016), DVD, home.   Sally Hawkins and Ethan Hawke star in this deeply emotional biopic about Maude (Dowley) Lewis and her husband Everett She’s crippled with arthritis; he’s damaged by abuse, illiteracy, and whatever biological-emotional wounds he’s carrying with him in life. She’s been shunted and taken advantage of by family members; he’s lived a life of profound rage and isolation. She loves to paint. He needs a housekeeper She can’t do much, but their difficult connection creates a home and allows her to paint. And the world does come to the door of their primitive shack in Digby, Nova Scotia as her primitive paintings and cards begin to find the market Hawkins and Hawke are wonderful in their roles and director Aisling Walsh and writer Sherry White keep control on the story so that it doesn’t slip into melodrama. Well done and moving.
