Funded via Kickstarter, this Charles Kaufman weirdly lifelike animated piece follows Michael Stone, an analyst and popular writer on customer service (David Thewlis voice) through his day and appearance as the key speaker at a conference of customer service managers. He is, quite literally in his dreams, falling apart and that serves as the perfect metaphor for someone who writes of people as individuals but sees and hears all in one voice (Tom Noonan). His midlife crisis with marriage, parenting, and work has him self-medicating at a very high level. His only relief lies in the almost predatory interaction he has with a young woman, Lisa (Jennifer Jason Leigh) he meets in the conference hotel. The film follows his/their night together and the conference that follows. It is both interesting and strangely detached as the simulated lives of the animated characters play out before you. Kaufman also did the music. I was intrigued by the concept involved but repulsed by the lead character even as I understood and even empathized with the collapse and fear he was experiencing
