Beginnings

Posted on August 17, 2018 by Village Vidiot

Good film from Mike Mills looking at the struggles of 38-yo Oliver (Ewen McGregor) a graphic artist who has always had problems establishing a successful relationship. He learns his widowed father (Christopher Plummer) is gay, has taken a young lover, and is dying of cancer, although he is living with more passion than he ever showed during 40 years of a loving but cold and largely sexless marriage to Georgia, Oliver’s mother who clearly dies without ever knowing the passion she craves. Both lived lies: he was gay, she was Jewish. It follows Oliver’s efforts to connect with Anna (Melanie Laurent), a young French actress. He learns about new beginnings from his father’s joyful plunge into gay culture at 78. This is a very well done, interesting and thoughtful film featuring fine performances and directing. Plummer just won the Oscar for his role
