Being John Malkevich

Posted on August 17, 2018 by Village Vidiot

Both Bronwen and I really enjoyed this bizarre fantasy about a geeky puppeteer who finds a passageway into JM’s brain, rents trips, and then takes over the actor. In the process he losses both his wife and the woman he is infatuated with. About control, love, gender bending, lust, art, creativity. Starring JM but mostly John Cusack, Cameron Diaz, and Christine Keener. Orson Bean and Mary Kay Place do wonderful smaller bits, and Charlie Sheen comes along for the ride. A fine and fun job. Our friend Amy did not like this one at all. She found it “perverse and voyeuristic”. She’s right, but those are some of its charms. It resonates with existential and sexual tension, not to mention the dilemma of art and the power of stardom. Lots of fun. See this one!
