Classic with Paul Newman, Robert Redford, and Katherine Ross. A small bit from Strouther Martin as a ‘colorful’ mine engineer in Bolivia is a wonderful joke given his work with Newman in “Cool Hand Luke”. We wanted b to see this fine old western, but she really had some difficulty getting parts. Also, the whole western theme is quite alien to her. How times have changed. She felt it was just ok. I actually think Newman and Redford work better here than in “The Sting”. The directing and acting are first rate. Be sure to see the excellent interviews with Newman, Redford, Ross, and screenwriter William Goldman where each has a different take on what happened. Ross’s in particular is fascinating as she was barred from the set for venturing to film (with the extra camera) and infuriated director Hill and the other cameramen. She sees it only as a gender issue, but I suspect it was also a real labor/class issue as well. Fascinating
