I don’t get the rating system. A very, very tense fine drama from 2008 about two poor mothers: one white with an absent husband whose gambling has bankrupted the family in the impoverished part of Upstate New York, the other, a Mohawk widow who smuggles aliens into the US via the frozen river that has reservation land on either side. But it is also rated R!. This makes no sense at all. It’s a really good film with excellent acting by Oscar-nominated Melissa Leo (I have had such a serious crush on her ever since I saw her in “Homicide: Life on the Streets,”) as the white mom and Misty Upham as her Native American partner in crime. Very fine film. Lots of well deserved critical interest. It may finally make Leo the star she should have been for a long time. Quite the mix of ravaged and sexy. Life is very hard up there. Disaster lurks around every corner in this film. Very cool look at reservation life and Mohawk culture as well as class and gender in America. See this film!
