Meek’s Cutoff

Posted on August 17, 2018 by Village Vidiot

Best seen on the big screen, this is a meditation on American history and culture from director Kelley Reichart and screenwriter Jonathon Raymond (“Wendy and Lucy”). It picks up a wagon train lost mid-stream in 1845 as they struggle to make their way to Oregon. It is a moment in history where nothing is yet settled. Similarly, the film is unsettled silences full of men and women who don’t know where they are or where they are going. Who can or should they trust as they seek water and the way: the violent, racist trail guide or the Native American they capture?. All is undetermined and the answer is never clear. Many of the same fine actors from “Wendy and Lucy” including Michelle Williams and Will Patton. Amazing skies but astounding starkness rules. This is definitely not your traditional western. A very good and interesting film of silences. Democracy drives the train but no one knows where they’re going. See this film
