Based on a true story. Interesting and engaging look at a rather unhappy couple and their daughter who, as Jews, have fled Germany. Jettel (a beautiful daughter of the Jewish bourgeoisie) follows Walter (a former lawyer) to Kenya where they work farming for others. She is miserable and angry at him and her lot; he makes the best, despite wartime internment. Their daughter Regina loves and takes to Africa and their cook, Owuor (Sidede Onulo who tragically died shortly after the film was released) They slowly find out about family back home, discover Africa, and discover themselves, their strengths and weaknesses, and ultimately, their connection. Differences don’t disappear. This is not a story of simple virtuous victims, but complex middle class folk confronting a different set of issues in their lives. Won the 2002 Oscar for Best Foreign Film.
