I liked this movie despite its flaws. Twins, one the school slut (Reese Witherspoon, great in Election), the other a geek (Toby Maguire) who lives for (in) a 1950s sitcom about a place too white and perfect for words, get zapped into the episodes in the 1950s. There are no words in the books, there are no places outside the town, there are no problems. Also no lusts, passions, goals, hopes, or change. All is black and white, literally, and everyone is very gray. The twins, with their knowledge and passions wreck havoc on these folks with their scripted blandness and perfection. William Macy is fine (as always) as dad and Joan Allen works as the mom and Jackie O almost look-alike who finds her passion with the soda jerk-become-amazing-artist, Jeff Daniels. Funny bits aside, this makes the point to live with passion is to live with color. It is especially funny when the “coloreds” become a discriminated against minority in 1950s America. Nice touches. But the film itself is a frustrating and smug joke that includes the entire audience. We who live with passion. We who live in times of color. Who could oppose its views?. Therefore there is no conflict. It is all the bad times of the past. That’s not much of a conflict to resolve. But the film was fun anyway. Bronwen did not like it at all. She found it boring and totally predictable
