After Friday night’s talk-fest (“Before Sunset”) this is a comic-drama of silences and attitudes. Jim Jarmusch’s classic breakout film must have cost a few thousand to make but it stunned the film world in 1984. Willie (saxophonist for the Lounge Lizards John Lurie), a marginal gambling hipster in NY (and definitely not a part of the downtown scene) has to deal with this cousin Eva’s (15-16 yo Ezter Balint) arrival from Hungary. She’s naught but a bother to him His friend Eddie (Sonic Youth member Richard Edson) likes her but he’s pretty passive about everything. [Note: I’m a big fan of Edson and have enjoyed his work quite a bit over the years!. I always enjoy his appearances] She leaves and goes to visit her aunt in Cleveland, they follow a year later and then take off for Florida where strange things happen. It is a weird and very strange film for Jarmusch. Some will love it, some will hate it. I was exhausted from many hours of shoveling when I saw it and struggled to stay awake through the silences but even the memory is exhilarating
