The Descendents

Posted on August 17, 2018 by Village Vidiot

Finally made it back into the theater to see a film. We went to our local Venue (that’s its name) and wanted to see “Tinker, Tailor” but it was sold out so we saw this. Clooney was very good as Matt, a workaholic lawyer with Hawaiian royal roots and mucho family land whose wife is in a coma and whose kids are a pretty messed up when he finds out his wife was having an affair. A moving, nicely photographed (Hawaii is really beautiful) family drama. A chick flick with a guy at the center discovering his own flaws about himself as a husband and parent linked to coming to terms with his responsibilities to preserve both family and Hawaiian ethnic/state heritage. B liked it more than I, but I enjoyed it despite my aversion to this sort of contrived emotional plot-line. Very nice work by Clooney, the two daughters, a cousin well-played by Beau Bridges (the heavier, less renowned of Lloyd “quien es mas macho?” Bridges’ sons), and Julie Greer as the wife of a local real estate agent. Too many quirky characters meant to lighten the load with humor, including some who are appealing (Matt’s father-in-law played by Robert Forster, and Sid, played by Nick Krause, a Sancho Panza-like friend of the older daughter along for the ride)
