“Don’t Look Up!” December 28, 2021, Netflix. “Dr. Strangelove” is one of my 10 Top Films of all time. But hardcore topical satire is tough to work. Adam McKay’s in-your-face look at our refusal to face the existential crisis of our time (climate) shows us how it has and may or, likely will, play out in our system of political games and economic power plays. Astronomy PhD. candidate Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence) is watching the skies one night when she discovers a comet. A big comet. She calls her anxiety-ridden advisor, Prof. Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) in and they and scientiests around the world chart the comets track and note it’s headed straight for Earth. Annihilation is coming. So how do we deal with it? Is President Orlean (Meryl Streep) and her staff including son Jason (Jonah Hill) up to the task? The media, and especially talk show host Brie Eventee (Kate Blanchett) take to Mindy who becomes a media darling, much to Dibiasky’s disgust. But whose interests are at stake? Will science or money, embodied in Musk/Besos,/Zuckerberg and every other gazillionaire wrapped into one, Peter Isherwell (Mark Rylance) triumph? Will Orlean/Isherwell make the world safe (great?) again? It has some very funny and very horrifying bits played by fine pros. Will it wake anyone up who isn’t already convinced? I doubt they’ll be interested in watching it to be beaten over the head. That’s part of the problem with this sort of film. It’s not quite as deranged and funny as Strangelove. “We’ll meet again, don’t know where, don’t know when.”
