“Good Luck to You, Leo Grande,” July 10, 2022, Hulu, full female nudity, partial male nudity. We both enjoyed and appreciated this look at the complexities of female sexuality in the context of a culture that, despite the ‘sexual revolutions’ of the past 60 years, has not meant sexual fulfillment to many women in heterosexual relationships. Directed by Sophie Hyde and written by Katy Brand, Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack star in what is essentially a story of sexual awakening, but with a twist. Nancy Stokes (Emma Thompson) is a 60-ish widow who has lived a life of perfunctory and utterly unsatisfying sex with her late husband. She hires the very attractive young escort/sex worker, Leo Grande (Daryl McCormack), in the hopes of exploring her sexuality. She’s not looking for the exotic, but desperately desires to reach orgasmic satisfaction. Her violation of his privacy threatens to end their connection but also impels mutual revelations that force each to confront and accept themselves and the lives they’ve lived and are living. This is a well-written, verbally quick story of two folks who have lived different sorts of closed and secretive lives. The resolution is a bit too neat, but the film works. I wonder if the exceptionally positive response to the film would be the same if it was an older man who had lived an unsatisfying and restrictive sex life and a younger female escort?
