“On the Rocks,” February 10, 2023 (2020), DVD. Let’s start with the conclusion. I was, sadly, disappointed in this flat, poorly paced, mostly unfunny comedy about rich, young, unbelievably successful, hardworking and beautiful African-Americans in NYC. (And yes, I care just as little about their Euro-American counterparts.) Make no mistake about it, the film’s primary virtue is to show you that their lives, jealousies, fears, etc. are almost as boring as those of their White (to cap or not to cap?) counterparts, although the writing sends you down a McGuffin trail to convince you otherwise. I expected so much more from the Sofia Coppola vehicle starring Bill Murray and Rashida Jones. She’s Laura, talented writer and wife of Dean (Marlon Wayans), hard-working, sweet but obsessed head of a tech startup. She’s at sixes-and-sevens with two beautiful kids and a writer’s-block. Enter her not funny enough dad, Bill Murray and her fears of infidelity and ‘does he still love boring maternal me.’ These worreis spark the incredibly rich former art dealer dad to purportedly comical intervention to help her ‘get ahead of the situation.’ Except way too little is funny and the pacing is way off. Maybe old guy (as opposed to middle aged guy) Bill lacks chemistry with Jones vs. Scarlett Johansson, where it worked wonderfully. Maybe it’s just bad writing and/or directing, but it never worked for me. And I love Murray in so many things and thought Coppola a sure winner, if only she stayed behind the camera. There are some very pretty shots in a beach resort for the rich in Mexico.
